A Personal Cardiologist For Our Patients

Our extensive team of adult and pediatric cardiologists enables us to offer our patients an approach to care that mirrors that of a “personal cardiologist.” At Sharon Regional, one cardiologist will follow a patient throughout their care, allowing for continuity of information, a stronger patient/doctor relationship,
and better outcomes. Cardiologist can be seen at Sharon, Hermitage or Hubbard, OH.

In addition, The Heart & Vascular Institute also offers:

Valve surgery, stents, chest pain emergency center, exercise stress tests, nuclear cardiology, SPECT scans, echocardiography, stress echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, pacemaker implants, pacemaker clinic, cardiac rehabilitation programs, cardiac wellness programs, pediatric cardiology clinics, cardiothoracic clinic, chronic heart failure program, 24-hour Holter monitors, event monitors, ambulatory blood pressure monitors, electrocardiograms (EKGs), signal average electrocardiograms, heart healthy eating classes, and CPR classes.

The Heart and Vascular Institute also provides advanced heart imaging through cardiac CT and MRI, which is based at the Diagnostic and Imaging Center, Garden Way, Hermitage.  Cardiologist J. Ronald Mikolich, M.D., is based at the Center and specializes in both Cardiac CT Angiography and Cardiac MRI, while maintaining a Consultative Cardiology practice. Dr. Mikolich is board certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Internal Medicine, and is also a Fellow of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.
Dr. Mikolich utilizes these advanced imaging techniques to diagnose blocked arteries to the heart, malfunctioning heart valves, impaired heart muscle function, as well as congenital heart disease. Frequently, these non-invasive tests help physicians “see” disease processes that are not well visualized with older imaging modalities.
Recent advances in CT scanners have made “screening” exams possible for patients without any symptoms. A CT Cardiac Scoring exam provides a cross sectional view of the heart and blood vessels. A computer measures the amounts of calcium in the arteries of the heart and generates a calcium score. A high score is associated with hardening of the arteries. CT Cardiac Scoring can determine whether or not underlying coronary artery disease (calcified plaque) is present, and the “score” provides an estimate of the extent and severity of coronary disease.

New Facilities

The Heart & Vascular Institute includes two new open heart surgical suites, a cardiovascular recovery and intensive care unit, waiting areas for patients and families, and a second cardiac cath lab. With the addition of open heart surgery, Sharon Regional is the only hospital in Mercer County capable of performing low-risk and advanced cardiac catheterizations and angioplasty. These additional facilities make the care we provide even better. And they certainly make the lives of our patients and their families much easier.

A Tradition of Excellence

While The Heart & Vascular Institute may be new, our commitment to first-class, comprehensive heart care is anything but. Over the past 10 years, The Heart & Vascular Institute at Sharon Regional has enjoyed a number of firsts for this area.
